Gabriel Singer

San Francisco State University Student, Project, Rebound Excell Network Ambassador

Through this journey, Gabriel developed a deep commitment to art and to supporting individuals who have experienced incarceration. He spent countless hours in his cell honing his craft and exploring new techniques—skills he discovered and refined during his time inside. While incarcerated, he was selected to join a group of artists to paint murals in the prison gym. After his release, Gabriel enrolled at San Francisco State University through Project Rebound, majoring in Criminal Justice and minoring in Prison Reentry Services. In the Fall 2024 semester, he curated an art show during Project Rebound’s Mural Celebration titled “Our Love is Stronger Than Their Walls.” The exhibition explored the experience of maintaining relationships during incarceration through artistic expression. This project led to an internship with the William James Association, facilitated by the California Lawyers for the Arts’ program Designing Creative Futures. Inspired by this experience, Gabriel is now dedicated to helping other formerly incarcerated artists find pathways to professional careers in the art world.

In recent years he began working in the non -profit sector particularly focusing on reentry. He currently serves as a program manager at California Lawyers for the arts leading their reentry program Designing Creative Futures.

Donald Diggs

Excell Network Ambassador and Artist

Donald Diggs is a passionate artist, lifelong learner, and powerful voice for transformation and resilience. Specializing in Raku ceramics, his work explores themes of connection, perseverance, and personal growth—often inspired by the raw textures and beautiful unpredictability of the Raku process. In addition to ceramics, Donald expresses his creativity through painting in various mediums, using color, texture, and form to convey deep emotional and experiential narratives. After overcoming 43 years of incarceration, Donald has dedicated himself to community service, mentorship, and the arts. His journey is a testament to the power of change, faith, and the enduring human spirit. He is nearing the completion of his parole, with full discharge expected in December, and will soon graduate from Laney College with a degree in Sociology. Donald plans to continue his academic journey by pursuing a degree in Art, further deepening his commitment to creative expression and social impact. Through his art and public speaking, Donald Diggs inspires others to believe in the possibility of renewal and the strength found in self-expression.

Henry Frank

At the age of nineteen, Henry was sentenced to 29 years to life in the California state prison system. He was paroled in 2013 at the age of thirty-nine. Throughout his life, art has remained a constant presence and a vital source of meaning. During his incarceration, Henry became deeply involved in the Arts in Corrections (AIC) program, where he was introduced to the William James Association and a wide range of artistic disciplines, including block printing, bookbinding, creative writing, and color theory. For three years, Henry served as a clerk to the Artist Facilitator, where he played a key role in supporting the program’s operations. His responsibilities included drafting proposals and memos, managing accounting and inventory, coordinating schedules, supporting art and food sales, producing concerts and events, and helping resolve participant conflicts. When asked by the parole board to articulate what art meant to him, Henry shared: “It taught me to be patient, critical, and humble. The AIC gave me a place to be trusting, responsible, and social. Art gives me meaning, contentment, and inner peace.” Henry’s journey is a powerful example of how creativity can foster personal growth, healing, and transformation—even in the most challenging circumstances.

Michael DaSilva is a formerly incarcerated artist who discovered his passion for art during his time in prison. Through drawing, he found a powerful way to process the harm he had caused and begin his journey of healing. What began as a means to earn a living—creating portraits—quickly evolved into a way to connect with others. Through his art, Michael learned about the lives, families, and love stories of those around him. Now newly released, Michael is fully enrolled at Sonoma State University, where he is studying Psychology. He aspires to become a substance abuse counselor while continuing to pursue his artistic practice.

By trade Gary Harrell is an artist, entrepreneur, craftsman, and a harmonica blues musician. Gary Harrell was born in Spring Hill Louisiana and raised in Orange County California. He now resides in Sacramento California with wife and family. In 1993 Gary Harrell was incarcerated at San Quentin Prison where he served his sentence until paroled in 2020. In 1985, eight years into his sentence, he started making art. Gary had never considered a career as a visual artist until he was introduced to the arts & corrections program in San Quentin. He started out doing woodwork and molding glass and plastic, then he expanded into new media such as block prints and advanced techniques in pointillism. It was in this introduction to the arts that the meaning of art changed for him. His work has been featured at MoMa PS1, Queens, New York; Museum of the African Diaspora; University of Derby, England; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; Art in Action Gallery, Flagstaff, Cooper Hewitt Museum, Smithsonian, New York; Kala Art Institute; The Washington Post and others. Mick Gardner

President and CEO, U.N.I.T.Y. Unfolding New Ideas Towards Yourself

M. Mick Gardner is the President and Founder of Unfolding New Ideas Towards Yourself (U.N.I.T.Y.), an organization dedicated to empowering underserved communities through a holistic range of services. U.N.I.T.Y.’s core components include Restorative Practices and Community Building, Trauma-Responsive Education, Transitional Housing (launching in 2024), and the podcast Changing the Narrative. The organization provides outreach and support to pre- and post-release individuals and their families, as well as veterans, the elderly, transgender individuals, and those experiencing homelessness. In addition, Mick is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of No More Tears, a pioneering initiative launched in 2002 within California State Prison San Quentin. This prisoner-guided program focuses on violence and crime prevention, restorative healing circles, and reentry support. Today, No More Tears has expanded its reach to include youth and returning citizens in Alameda County. With over 35 years of experience, Mick has become a respected program design consultant, specializing in in-prison and jail-based intervention models. His work integrates restorative justice, substance abuse recovery, and infectious disease risk reduction. He has played a key role in developing and evaluating both in-custody case management and post-release services, and has been a trailblazer in utilizing inmate peer mentors to create innovative, effective programming. Mick Gardner’s lifelong commitment to healing, empowerment, and systemic change continues to inspire communities and transform lives.

Dr. Nichole Pettway

Dr. Nichole Pettway is a nationally certified addiction counselor, motivational speaker, author, and the visionary founder of the Building Bridges Foundation. A proud returning citizen, Dr. Pettway has transformed her life’s challenges—including incarceration, addiction, and early trauma—into a powerful platform for healing, purpose, and empowerment. She holds a B.S. in Business Management, a Master’s degree in Psychology with a focus on Marriage and Family Therapy, and a Doctorate in Humanities. Drawing from both her academic background and lived experience, Dr. Pettway leads trauma-informed recovery programs and job readiness trainings across California. Currently serving as the Deputy Director of BOSS (Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency), she is deeply committed to breaking cycles of recidivism and helping individuals recognize their inherent worth—regardless of their past. Dr. Pettway is living proof that our past does not define us—it refines us. As she often says, “Broken crayons still color.”

Joey Mason

Outreach Specialist, Alameda County Probation

Joey Mason has traveled a remarkable path of transformation, resilience, and service. In 1999, he began a 25-years-to-life sentence under California’s former Three Strikes Law for a property crime. While incarcerated in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), Joey made a life-changing decision to pursue personal growth and rehabilitation. He immersed himself in the programs offered at San Quentin, first as a student and later as a certified facilitator. Over the years, Joey earned numerous facilitator certifications and played a leadership role in programs such as Marin Shakespeare, Addiction Recovery Counseling, Violence Prevention, Victim Offender Education Group (VOEG), Restorative Justice, Brother’s Keeper (as a state-certified crisis and suicide prevention counselor), and No More Tears. His mission was to help others transform their lives and reduce recidivism through education, empathy, and accountability. In recognition of his dedication, the Directors of CDCR petitioned the courts in 2018 to recall his sentence. After serving 20 years, Joey was resentenced and released at the age of 58. His commitment to rehabilitation and community impact caught the attention of Alameda County Probation Department Chief Wendy Still, who hired him as the department’s first Community Outreach Worker—the first role of its kind in the United States at the time. Since March 2021, Joey has worked full-time alongside probation officers, providing peer support and helping clients navigate their own reentry journeys. Joey’s story is one of perseverance and purpose. Just two years and seven months after his release, he achieved a major milestone: becoming a homeowner. His journey continues to inspire others and exemplifies the power of second chances.

Rafael Bankston is a dedicated and resilient individual who, at 43 years of age, is embracing a new chapter in life. After serving 23 years of incarceration—beginning as a teenager—Rafael has spent the past 15 months reacclimating to freedom and rebuilding his life with purpose and determination. Now the Lead Chef at Chipotle Mexican Grill, Rafael brings passion and leadership to his role in the culinary world. He is also pursuing an Associate of Arts degree in Communications and actively engages in public speaking, using his voice and experiences to inspire others and advocate for positive change.

Rocky Nguyen is a dedicated advocate for second chances and successful reentry. Since discharging parole in 2022, he has remained committed to personal growth and community impact, with no negative occurrences since his release. Rocky currently serves as the Lead Case Manager for the Five Keys Houseless Navigation Program in San Francisco. In this role, he supports formerly incarcerated individuals and those struggling with substance use and homelessness, helping them transition into stable, productive members of society. As a mentor and guide, Rocky brings empathy, lived experience, and unwavering resolve to his work. A proud graduate of the No More Tears program, Rocky draws on the life skills he gained during incarceration to overcome transitional challenges and stay grounded in his support system. He shares his story to inspire others, showing that with preparation, accountability, and the right mindset, a meaningful life beyond the walls is possible. His message to those still inside is clear: start planning now—the other side of the wall holds real opportunity.

Jammie Rozelle Harrison is a dedicated mentor, advocate, and returning citizen who has transformed her life through service, education, and healing. Sentenced to 41 years to life under California’s former non-violent Three Strikes Law, Jamie spent 21 years incarcerated. During that time, she became a lead mentor within the California Model, facilitating recovery-centered groups focused on trauma healing and addiction recovery. Jammie’s personal journey through addiction and suicidal ideation has deeply shaped her commitment to transformation and community impact. Today, she serves as an Ambassador with Five Keys Housing and Education and is an active member of both the EXCELL Network and the CROP Organization. Through these roles, she continues to build the skills and relationships necessary for a meaningful and purpose-driven career. Jamie holds an associate’s degree in Sociology and aspires to pursue a future in Human Resources, where he can continue to help others heal, grow, and realize their potential.

Barbara Chavez is a proud Mexican American policy advocate and community organizer whose leadership is deeply rooted in lived experience. Having survived over 20 years of incarceration, Barbara has dedicated her life to uplifting incarcerated voices, supporting survivors, and driving systemic change. Since 2019, she has worked tirelessly to advance justice and equity. In 2023, she served as the Elder Freeman Policy Fellow at Legal Services for Prisoners with Children. Today, Barbara is the Senior Outside Policy Fellow at the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, where she organizes alongside incarcerated leaders and leads efforts to end Life Without Parole (LWOP) sentencing. Rooted in Barstow, California, Barbara is committed to building pathways of freedom, healing, and collective liberation for all impacted communities.

Yanira Armster is a powerful example of transformation, resilience, and leadership. At just 17 years old, she was sentenced to three life terms plus 26 years for a crime committed during her time as a gang member in Compton. Despite the weight of her sentence, Yanira chose a different path—one of education, healing, and purpose. During her 24 years of incarceration, she committed herself to personal growth and change. Since her release, Yanira has continued that journey by dedicating her life to helping others. She began her career at Options Recovery Services as a Women’s Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselor and now serves as the Coordinator of Programs. In this role, she supports individuals in transforming their lives and behaviors, just as she did. Yanira’s story is a testament to the power of redemption and the impact of second chances. She continues to inspire others through her work and her unwavering commitment to change.

Ayanna Elliott-Green

Ayanna Elliott-Green is a powerful voice for justice, healing, and transformation. At just 19 years old, she was sentenced to 25 years in prison for first-degree premeditated murder—a consequence of a traumatic and violent attack rooted in homophobia. Targeted by three adult men for being openly gay, Ayanna defended herself in a moment that would alter the course of her life and separate her from her son and daughter for over two decades. Raised by two military parents, Ayanna was taught to respond to threats with strength. While that instinct may have protected her in the moment, it came at a great cost. During her incarceration, she committed herself to growth and service, becoming a certified mentor and facilitator. She now teaches others the importance of emotional regulation, recognizing danger, and making decisions that protect—not jeopardize—their futures. Today, Ayanna works with the unhoused population in Oakland, using her lived experience and faith as a foundation to bring love, hope, guidance, and peace to her community. Grounded in the Word of God, she continues to be a beacon of strength and compassion, committed to being part of the solution and walking alongside others on their path to healing.

Sol Mercado

Reentry Coordinator, Planting Justice

Sol Mercado is the Reentry Coordinator at Planting Justice, a nonprofit organization based in Oakland, California. A formerly incarcerated woman, Sol spent 16 years in prison after fighting the death penalty for five years and ultimately receiving a 31-year sentence. Thanks to California’s Youth Offender Bill (SB261), she was granted a parole hearing, found suitable, and released four years ago. Since her release, Sol has become a passionate advocate and freedom fighter, using her voice to champion the rights and humanity of those still incarcerated. She firmly believes in the power of healing and rehabilitation and works tirelessly to create opportunities for transformation and justice. One of Sol’s most meaningful contributions is her work building gardens inside prisons. These gardens serve as living memorials to victims of crime and as spaces for healing, reflection, and growth. Through nature, Sol teaches incarcerated individuals the power of restoration—both of the land and of the self. Her story is one of courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to collective liberation.

Celia Firl is the co-founder of Hope Beyond, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women. After serving 17 years on a 15-years-to-life sentence for second-degree murder, Celia was discharged just 11 months after her release. Her journey from incarceration to community leadership is a powerful testament to transformation, purpose, and hope. Despite growing up in a stable home, Celia’s early struggles with addiction led her down a path that resulted in life-altering consequences. While incarcerated, she began to reimagine her future, never expecting that she would one day co-found a nonprofit committed to giving back. Through Hope Beyond, Celia and her best friend provide board preparation support to women in California state prisons, run a pen pal program, and offer reentry assistance to help women rebuild their lives. Having experienced firsthand the lack of resources available inside prison, Celia is passionate about filling that gap. Under her leadership, Hope Beyond has tripled in size in just the past year. Her mission is clear: to serve the often-forgotten community of incarcerated women by offering the hope, guidance, and support they so desperately need.

Terrance Stewart, M.Ed., is the National Training Director of the TimeDone Project at the Alliance for Safety and Justice, where he leads multi-state efforts to eliminate barriers to re-entry for individuals with past convictions. He has over a decade of experience in advocacy, policy reform, and community organizing, playing a pivotal role in advancing transformative legislation including AB 1076, SB 731, AB 1008, Proposition 47, and Proposition 57. A graduate of the University of California, Riverside, he is also the founder of #CantCant Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, a founding member of Riverside of Us or None and a board member for Underground Scholars Initiative. Dedicated to uplifting people with past convictions, Terrance’s work centers on creating pathways to upward mobility, redemption, and social justice.

Saun G. Hough is the CA Partnerships Manager for Californians for Safety & Justice, where he coordinates public education campaigns and state and local coalitions to advance CSJ’s policy and programs work and to promote shared safety initiatives that replace wasteful prison spending with more effective safety solutions. His successful record of prior advocacy includes work to advance fair hiring practices for formerly incarcerated job seekers and efforts to achieve equitable judicial relief for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated community members. Saun is also an accomplished workforce development professional who specializes in working with underserved communities, including incarcerated and formerly incarcerated youth and adults. Saun also serves as an Executive Board member for the Reentry Providers Association of California (REPAC), the Nation’s first 501(c)(4) non-profit organization representing members who are non-profits, grassroots and service organizations seeking to create and restore healthy communities by assisting citizens’ re-entry & reintegration into the community following incarceration. Immediately prior to joining Californians for Safety and Justice, he served as the Vocational Services Administrator at SHIELDS for Families Inc. Bill Erben, Director of Workforce Development Mr. Erben began with Goodwill after 6 years in federal prison and came through their People Working with Disabilities Program as a program participant, training as a grocery shelf stocker at one of Goodwill East Bay’s federal grant locations. He was promoted within a year to Lead Trainer working with program participants and then soon took over as project manager. Mr. Erben moved on to be a case manager and then to a project manager on various welfare to work and justice involved contracts throughout the next few years. As an experienced, results driven leader with over 25 years of management experience in Workforce Development, Bill Erben has spent the past nine (9) years as the Director of Workforce Development for the San Francisco Bay Region. Mr. Erben has been with Goodwill for more than 33 years. As Director of Workforce Development, Mr. Erben oversees all of mission services for the San Francisco Bay region which encompasses San Francisco, San Mateo, Marin, Alameda, Contra Costa, and Solano counties. Mr. Erben manages the operations of six (6) community career service centers and offers job training and job placement services to people within the community along with several federal, City and County grants and contracts. The Director of Workforce Development is a key member of the workforce development team. This position provides direction and management not only to mission services, but also the agency’s career service centers, and direct placement services for all Workforce Development contracts and grants within the east San Francisco Bay region. Fr. George Williams, SJ, hails from North Haven, CT. After graduating from Syracuse University, he served as an Air Force officer. In 1984, he joined the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Nome, AK, where he worked as a DJ and news editor for KNOM, a Jesuit-founded radio station. Entering the Society of Jesus in 1987, he felt called to prison ministry and began serving as the Catholic Chaplain at the Boston Jail. He earned an MSW, an M.Div. and master’s in Spiritual Direction from Boston College and a Ph.D. in Criminology from Northeastern University. Ordained in 2004, he moved to the Bay Area in 2010 to become the Catholic Chaplain at San Quentin State Prison. A founding member of the Catholic Prison Ministries Coalition, he continues in his ministry as the Catholic Chaplain at San Quentin.

Deacon Fred Thornton, was born on April 4, 1962, at Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii, [He] was raised in a proud Navy family led by his father, Freddie B. Thornton Sr., a U.S. Navy Master Chief and Ph.D. Throughout his youth, he lived in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, and eventually settled in San Diego, California, in 1968. Today, he resides in Pine Valley, California with his wife, son, daughter, and three grandsons. In 1981, he graduated from the United States Marine Corps Boot Camp at MCRD San Diego and served in the active reserves with A Company, 4th Tank Battalion, 4th Marine Division as a tank crewman (MOS 1911). His commitment continued as he joined the California Army National Guard in 1989, where he served in the 2/185th Armored Company, 40th Infantry Division (Mechanized). His roles ranged from tank crewman (19E4) to tank commander and platoon sergeant (19K5), also serving as a lead gunnery and combat tactics instructor. In 1985, he began a distinguished career with the San Diego Police Department, dedicating decades of service to the underserved communities of Southeast San Diego, Logan Heights, and Mid-City. During his tenure, he earned recognition and expertise in multiple disciplines including: Patrol theory and methodology Gang dynamics Narcotics (sales, distribution, recognition, and use) Drug and alcohol influence recognition under H&S Code 11550 DUI investigations Motorcycle and traffic enforcement Advanced collision investigation and reconstruction Community relations and environmental crime prevention Police chaplaincy He retired from SDPD in 2017 after more than 30 years of impactful law enforcement service. In June 2014, he was ordained as a Catholic Deacon in the Diocese of San Diego. Ebony’s path is grounded in Spirit and guided by her elders, ancestors, and community. She is called to engage in care work with communities navigating, resisting, and healing from structural violence. As a Black woman, Ebony prioritizes her advocacy, organizing, teaching, consulting, and healing guidance work to uplift Black people and Black communities, while recognizing the pervasive impact of oppressive conditions on all marginalized communities. Ebony has worked across a variety of institutional settings including public education, child welfare, community based mental health, non-profit sectors, and carceral systems. Her practice has always been accompanied by efforts to partner with those most impacted to build community and implement change. Principles from Transformative Justice, Disability Justice, and the Black Radical tradition like self-determination, intersectionality, collective empowerment, sovereignty, and love inform her perspective and guide her approach. Ebony currently facilitates a program called Family Reunification at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center which supports both the residents about to be released and their loved ones outside for a successful reentry.

During his tenure, Julio developed several impactful programs, including Christmas Angels, Excell Network, Restorative Justice Leadership Summit, Reentry Conference, Webinar and Expo, Restorative Justice Parenting Training for Women in Domestic Violence, the Crime Survivors Ministry, and the San Quentin In-Custody Reentry Fair. These programs have provided crucial support to crime survivors, incarcerated individuals, and their families. Julio's dedication to this field was deeply motivated by the tragic death of his half-brother due to an overdose of alcohol and drugs, including cocaine. Maria Climaco is a mother whose life was forever changed by the tragic loss of her only child, Aya Raphael Climaco-Nakano. Aya, a compassionate and vibrant young man, was fatally shot on June 12, 2013—just one hour before his 23rd birthday. He had recently graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Sociology and was beginning a promising career in logistics, with aspirations to work in the sports industry. Maria describes Aya as her heart, her joy, and her purpose. His warmth, humor, and sense of justice left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. From standing up for classmates to predicting the rise of NBA star Stephen Curry, Aya’s spirit was full of insight and kindness. His legacy lives on through a scholarship in his name at Sacred Heart Prep in Atherton. Since Aya’s passing, Maria has become a powerful voice in the movement to end gun violence. Her advocacy is rooted in love, grief, and a deep desire to honor her son’s life by working toward a safer, more compassionate world. Angel Garcias was born in Stamford, Connecticut, and spent his childhood across the East Coast and Puerto Rico. He served 11 years in the U.S. Army, including two combat deployments, and lived in Germany during his military service. After completing his service, Angel pursued a degree in history and began working at a small regional museum in North Carolina. His career with the National Park Service began in Baltimore, Maryland, and over the past seven years, he has contributed to four different park sites. Today, Angel’s work focuses on speaking about incarceration, justice, and our shared humanity—an endeavor he describes as the most fulfilling experience of his life.

Victoria Westbrook struggled with methamphetamine addiction for over 20 years which led to her selling drugs, resulting in a drug trafficking conviction and a federal prison sentence. Since releasing in 2016, Victoria has been actively involved in addressing addiction and reentry issues within San Francisco. In 2017, Victoria began leading Code Tenderloin, a non-profit which provides employment opportunities for justice-involved and other vulnerable individuals with extreme barriers to employment. In 2018, she was appointed to the Reentry Council of the City and County of San Francisco by the Board of Supervisors. In 2019, the San Francisco Adult Probation Department hired Victoria to develop and implement a platform of gender-responsive services and policies aimed at improving outcomes for justice-involved cisgender and transgender women. In 2020, Victoria's responsibilities expanded to include overseeing and staffing the Reentry Council, its three subcommittees, and the Community Corrections Partnership. In recognition of her dedication and expertise, Victoria was promoted to the position of Reentry Division Director in November 2023. In this role, she oversees the Community Assessment and Services Center (CASC), a comprehensive platform of over 50 reentry service programs, and the Reentry Council. Alongside her professional commitments, Victoria recently obtained a master's degree in clinical Mental Health Counseling and is now an Associate Marriage & Family Therapist, further demonstrating her commitment to supporting individuals in the justice system.

Her personal transformation through the housing program directly informs her current work, where she uses her lived experience to connect with and support clients facing similar challenges. Kristen has been working with sex trafficking and sexual exploitation survivors as a member of the SafeHouse team for over 13 years. She also currently works in the community as a psychotherapist. In previous positions, Kristen focused on providing clinical services to women and children through therapy and case management. Over her career, she has consistently advocated for a survivor-centered approach to services and strives to elevate the voices and experiences of the women most impacted by systemic oppression, the prison-industrial complex, interpersonal violence and sexual assault. She holds a master's in counseling psychology from The Wright Institute and is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Prior to joining the Farming Hope team, Andie founded and operated her family’s multi-unit restaurant and catering business, arming her with a deep understanding of restaurant operational management and passion to make real change in our broken food system. Teresa Goines

Founder and CEO Old Skool Cafe

Teresa Goines is the founder and CEO of Old Skool Cafe – a supper club run by at-risk youth in San Francisco, which provides training, jobs, and a second chance at life for youth coming out of incarceration and foster care. Teresa's experience working with gang-affiliated youth, as a juvenile correction officer, impacted her life in a way that changed her forever. Their stories gave her an in-depth understanding of how many young people end up on such a destructive path. They compelled her to find a solution to the hopelessness she saw in the lives of incarcerated and forgotten youth. Teresa's mission is to permanently break the cycle of incarceration by giving young people hope, economic opportunities, and training in a supportive environment where they can grow emotionally, physically, and spiritually. From this passion, the concept of Old Skool Cafe was born in 2005. Ms. Goines has received several awards and recognition for her work with Old Skool Cafe and the Bayview Community: 2013 CNN Hero Award, 2012 Wells Fargo Community Spirit Award, 2011 Bank of America – Neighborhood Excellence Local Hero Award, 2011 Westmont Global Alumni Award, 2009 FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award, 2008 Jefferson Award, and 2006 San Francisco Foundation Koshland Bayview Fellowship Award. 1429

Legislative Affairs Manager, SF Adult Probation

Alek Hartwick is the Legislative Affairs Manager for San Francisco’s Adult Probation Department where he supports reentry program development, data collection, analysis, and stakeholder coordination for improved outcomes for individuals under supervision. He also facilitates the Reentry Council of San Francisco and is passionate about addressing institutional barriers to reentry by investigating legislation and policy solutions. Alek has over 16 years of experience in local and federal government advancing policy and managing social and economic program development in Washington D.C and across Native American communities.

Clyde Mendez

Formerly Incarcerated

Clyde Che Mendez is a formerly incarcerated individual who was born and raised in central California. At a young age, he followed the path of his family, which involved gang involvement and other criminal activities. At 18 years of age, he was arrested for second-degree murder and sentenced to 15 years to life in 1992. Clyde spent the next 30 years in the California prison system, and for most of that time, he continued to live the same destructive life he had lived as a child. As time went on, he realized he had to change. On August 31, 2021, he was granted parole, and five months later, he was released on February 9, 2022. He was sent to GEO Transitional House in San Francisco and was assigned to Agent Yee. At first, Clyde wanted to return to Fresno, but Agent Yee asked him to give San Francisco a chance. He did, and he has not looked back since. Clyde has been free for nearly four years and has been off parole for a year and seven months. He now works with the City of San Francisco's health care department, helping those who are coming home transition into society. His former agent treated him kindly and was a great help in this process, allowing him to understand that the system is different than it used to be—having a team of people who want you to succeed instead of trying to send you back. Clyde has made a great life in San Francisco and is doing all he can to help others do the same.

Kristen Coleman

Kristen Coleman, A native of Chicago, Illinois, has been a California Bay Area resident for 20 years. She started her federal career 20 years ago. After graduating from Xavier University of Louisiana, with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, she moved to the Bay Area and began working for the Bankruptcy Court. She worked for the Bankruptcy Court for approximately nine years and 11 years ago she transitioned from a Human Resources Specialist to a Community Resource Coordinator with the Federal probation office, Northern District of California. While working as a Community Resource Coordinator, Kristen gained experience with workforce development, which introduced her to the field of Probation. For the past 11 years, she has been a Probation Officer. In 2019, she became a certified Workforce Development Specialist and co-developed the Northen District of California’s Probation Office Workforce Development Program, Work Opportunities and Resource for Change (WORC). In 2022, she became a Probation Officer Reentry Specialist, her current role, which includes leading the WORC program and working closely with the federal Residential Reentry Centers (RRC/halfway houses) located in Oakland and San Francisco. Throughout her career, Kristen has developed programs, developed training, created processes, mentored officers, and facilitated groups and training. She is currently in a Federal Court leadership program and is in the process of leading a group of Probation officers in developing a new officer training program for the Northern District of California Probation office.

Nicole Caruso was born and raised in San Francisco, Nicole Caruso has dedicated over 14 years to the field of probation, serving the community with professionalism, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to rehabilitation and public safety. A proud graduate of San Francisco State University, Nicole began her career working in case management with young, incarcerated adults, where she developed a strong foundation in restorative justice and trauma-informed care. Over the years, Nicole has built a diverse portfolio within the probation system. Her experience includes working in custody with incarcerated women, where she provided direct supervision, support, and guidance tailored to the unique needs of female offenders. Additionally, Nicole served in the GPS unit under the SFSD, where she played a key role in monitoring high-risk clients and ensuring compliance with court-ordered conditions. With a deep understanding of the challenges faced by justice-involved individuals, Nicole continues to approach her work with empathy, integrity, and a firm belief in second chances. Her approach to supervision is grounded in building trust and rapport with clients while maintaining clear boundaries and accountability.

Angela Christina Thomas

Angela Christina Thomas was born and primarily raised in San Francisco, California. An only child raised by her father, her early life was shaped by both love and hardship. She began using drugs and alcohol at the age of 13, setting the stage for a long battle with addiction and mental health challenges. Despite these struggles, she has always believed in the power of education as a tool for change and healing. From the age of 18, every time Angela committed to recovery, she integrated education into her personal treatment plan. Her dedication has resulted in multiple academic achievements. She holds an Associate of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting from Heald College, an Associate in Health Education from City College of San Francisco (CCSF), and is currently completing her Associate in Addiction Studies at CCSF, with graduation anticipated in June 2026. She also holds certifications as a Community Health Worker and in Diversity and Social Justice from CCSF. Angela is currently enrolled at San Francisco State University, majoring in Public Health and minoring in Communication. Angela is also a participant in Project Rebound at San Francisco State. Angela has been living sober since December 23, 2022. She is actively involved with 11 Steppers, a fellowship dedicated to nurturing spiritual growth and sustaining recovery. Angela lives with a mental health diagnosis of Schizoaffective Bipolar 1 Disorder, and through hard-won acceptance and ongoing medication adherence, she now embraces stability as part of her lifelong commitment to wellness. Throughout her life, Angela has faced legal challenges, including two terms in prison and numerous stints in San Francisco County Jail. However, she credits these experiences and the interventions of law enforcement, probation and parole officers, and caring professionals with saving her life. Their belief in her potential helped her discover her own self-worth. Angela is the proud mother of four children and four grandchildren, all of whom are productive members of society. While she wasn't always present in their lives due to her addiction and incarceration, she has worked through her guilt and trauma using therapy and the 12-Step recovery process. As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, she has done the difficult inner work of forgiveness both toward others and herself—on the path toward healing. Her most recent turning point came after her release from SF County Jail on June 6, 2023, when she was transported by her therapist Rhiannon to Salvation Army's Recovery and Wellness Center. There, she committed to recovery and graduated from Harbor Lights Treatment Center on December 24, 2023. She now resides at the Salvation Army's Joseph McFee Center, continuing her journey of service, self-improvement, and sobriety. Angela Thomas is living proof that recovery is possible. Her story is one of perseverance, education, and transformation—and she continues to inspire others through her example of hope, resilience, and purpose one day at a time.

Phillip Jiunti endured a journey of hardship through prison, street life, and drug use. It took him 27 years to realize he deserved a better life, but he understood it was up to him alone to make the changes and ask for the help he needed to succeed and become the man he was destined to be. Phillip came home on September 21st, 2021, and looked at those gates, swearing he would never return. He worked from the day of his release and continues today to overcome obstacles and challenges along the way, determined to make his dreams and happiness come true. His probation officer, Ms. Coleman, was a huge factor in his success. She consistently pushed him and told him he could do it, affirming when he was doing great. She also pointed him in the right directions to get the aid and support he needed to succeed. With his hard work and her support, Phillip has maintained his own place, his own car, and everything else he couldn't sustain in the past. He believes everyone can achieve this transformation—he is a living and breathing example that it can be done. Phillip is now off probation and succeeding in life.

Westley Rutter is the Program Director for the CASC and Minna Programs at Citywide Case Management, specializing in reentry services for clients impacted by the criminal justice system. He leads interdisciplinary teams in providing clinical services to support clients who have historically been underserved by the healthcare system. Wes holds a master’s in clinical social work from Smith College School for Social Work and a bachelor’s in social Welfare from UC Berkeley. His background is in work with adults and adolescents in community mental health settings.

Eddy Yee

Agent Eddy Yee is a proud San Franciscan, born, raised, and continuing to reside in San Francisco. A 20-year veteran of the department, he began his career with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) on July 5, 2005 at Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP). In 2011, Agent Yee attended the Parole Academy but returned to Salina Valley State Prison (SVSP) due to AB109 realignment. Undeterred in his ambition to become a Parole Agent, he re-enrolled in the Division of Adult Parole Operations (DAPO) Academy in November 2015. Upon completing the academy, he was assigned to the San Francisco 1 unit (SF1) in February 2016. Agent Yee has primarily managed a CPSRM caseload, focusing on the Long-Term Offender population, commonly referred to as Lifers. His dedication, persistence, and commitment to the mission exemplify the values of DAPO. Agent Yee possesses extensive knowledge and experience as a ‘Lifer’ Agent, establishing himself as a subject matter expert in managing lifer caseloads. He has contributed to the development and updating of lifer supervision policies and has actively collaborated with the Board of Parole Hearings (BPH). Agent Yee regularly visits San Quentin Rehabilitation Center to engage with Long-Term Offenders about the parole process and their reintegration into society. Additionally, he has shared his expertise on reentry by speaking to students at the University of San Francisco, further demonstrating his commitment to public education and rehabilitation. As the Senior Agent in the office, Agent Yee has mentored every new agent assigned to SF1, providing invaluable guidance and support. He continues to coordinate the San Francisco Perr Reentry Navigation Network (PRNN) and Parole and Community Team (PACT) meetings, consistently introducing new resources to enhance their effectiveness. Agent Yee is, and continues to be, an indispensable asset to the San Francisco parole office, exemplifying dedication and leadership in his role.
